Auto Pet Bowl is an electronic bowl that keeps your pet’s food or water clean until your pet is ready to eat. The bowl cover is activated by an infrared proximity sensor and a battery-operated electric motor. The sensor detects the presence of the pet and then opens the cover so that the pet may have access to the food. When the pet leaves the sensor range, the bowl cover closes automatically. This keeps dust, flies and bugs from getting to the food and keeps the food or water fresh. The Auto Open Pet Bowl’s cover opens to allow access to food or water whenever the infrared sensor detects motion in front of the bowl. The cover closes when no further motion is detected, thus keeping food or water fresh. The unit keeps dust and bugs out of the fresh food or water and contains the odor of food. The Auto Pet Bowl may be used for small dogs, cats and all other small pets, as it responds to any motion and can be used to free-feed or provide consistently fresh water on demand. The stainless steel inner bowl is removable for easy cleaning with dish soap and warm water or in the top rack of the dishwasher. (Do not ever put outer bowl in dishwasher or submerse in water.)

Returned this because it would not work consistently. On my kitchen counter it worked, but the lid slapped shut – too spooky for the cats.
Unit would not function on the hardwood floor for some reason, but on carpet or on the kitchen counter it did work, though inconsistently.
I purchased pet bowl trough Amazon.com from Smarthome. I received the bowl on 12/2/08. The hardware was defective(bowl opened and closed intermitently, or stayed with lip open all the time). Contacted the vender and returned the bowl for replacement. They were prompt and courteous in handling this matter. I received the replacement on 12-18-08. It encoutered the SAME problem, opening and closing intermitlently or not closing at all. Therefore I am returning the bowl via FEDEX according to their instructions, please credit Master Card in the amount of $40.94, Thenk you. Marcela Davila ,
I bought this bowl to keep the birds from stealing my kitties chow. Unfortunatly my kitty never really trusted the thing so it never got to be used as I had hoped. In fact it put her off her food in general I think. I tried training her to no avail. Might work for a cat with a diferent personality or a dog.
OK, maybe hi-tech is not the way to go! This thing “senses” when your animal comes near and opens to give it fresh food. Good in theory BUT…It also senses ANY movement near it-mom sweeping up, cat going to the litter box etc. I have a cat who hangs out in the freezer and runs to greet anyone who comes in the door. He is def. not a scared cat, but he avoids this thing like the plague. It sometimes even closes while he’s eating. I do not like it, needs too many batteries and I would never depend on it to feed him while I’m gone. Also, they have to be right in front of it, a little off to the side and it won’t open. The timer ones might be loud, but at least your cat is getting food.
