Item was the perfect gate for a wide space AFTER I ordered the inserts from Target; however, because we are using this in a very humid environment, the metal portions began to rust very quickly. Would I purchase it again? Yes, there are no other choices out there for EXTRA-WIDE spaces.
This is my second Carlson gate. We have a household with a baby, dog and cat, and we needed a gate that would contain the baby and dog, but let the cats go freely back and forth. This gate, with the built-in pet door, works fine for this — if you can get it installed right.
I’m a pretty handy guy, have a full home workshop, and have built furniture from scratch and have been fixing and building things around the house for 20+ years. I found the installation on the Maxi to be a major pain, and nearly impossible to get right, and the way it is designed there is no tolerance for error. There are two main problems: First, they provide a paper template for locating the screw holes for the 4 mounting brackets, and the template was inaccurate by an amazing 8 inches (if I had followed the template the lower edge of the gate would have ended up 8 inches above the floor). That’s unbelievably poor quality control. Second, once you get the template right, the 4 mounting points must each be in perfect relationship to one another vertically and horizontally. If one of the 4 mounts is off by an eighth of an inch, the gate won’t mount correctly. On the first Carlson gate I bought, I probably had to re-drill the mounting bracket holes 6 or 8 times to get them in exactly the right spot. On this one, being uber-careful, I got 3 out of 4 of them right the first time (after triple-checking everything).
The directions were poor as well. They don’t tell you, for example, that the walk-through door only swings one-way, which has implications if you are installing the gate at top or bottom of stairs.
So, if you love an installation challenge, this is a fine gate.
This gate (w/extension) does span the 96″ distance. I purchased it to keep puppies in half of my kitchen. But, they can slide between the bars very easily! These puppies will mature to be 30lb dogs and some can still fit through at 10 weeks and 10lbs! I had to try weaving some thick plastic sheets between the rails but that makes the gate portion unusable and collects lots of dirt. Good thing we’re tall, we all have to step over it! It is also kind of a flimsy metal in that it flexes a lot when the puppies jump on it, not rigid like some door gates. That may be to reduce the strain on the attachment ends but the whole thing makes a lot of noise when jumped on. So, if you have only a med-large, sedate dog, this will work. Someone with a terrier and a retriever will be sorely disappointed! Someone with puppies already is:-(.
This gate works great on our front porch. We can sit on the porch and not have to worry about the dogs running out to the sidewalk every time someone walks by. We had to order the extension but it fit perfectly. The little door allows us to let the cats through with out the big dogs getting out. After using it two years (leaving it up over the winter)there is just a hint of rust at the bottom of the rails.
Buyer be aware. The description and picture of contents in the box are not accurate. The picture shown includes 2 extensions that are not part of this product. The description states it reaches 60″, which it does not unless you buy those two extension.
I paid $69.99 plus $10.00 shipping from Revival Animal Health to learn this. I returned and was charged a 20% restocking fee and had to pay $20.00 shipping to return direct to manufacture (Carlson Pet Products). Rip off. Revival told me that I should have bought direct from them instead of using Amazon… then they could help me out more.
I should have just bought the extensions from them, but I was so mad at being treated so poorly – that I paid to return and be penalized.
This is the last time I will purchase anything from an Amazon Seller. Might as well deal with EBay. Only Amazon direct from here.
