I’ve put all kinds of stuff in these balls, as recommended by our neighbor. I even ordered two of each size when the big ole hound dog didn’t like the large one. None of our three dogs are even a little interested. I’m going to donate them to our humane shelter just to get them out of the house.
For my dog this toy did not hold up at all. I have a weimaraner and was looking for something to put treats in to keep him occupied while away from the house. We had to throw the toy out because he was chewing off pieces and swallowing them.
My dog does like this toy, but only when it has something in it. In fact when there is something in it, he devotes all his attention to getting the treat. It’s a well made ball and should stand up to time and normal wear. Here’s the problem and why I said it’s almost too good: it’s really rigid. The ball is too rigid for my dog’s size. I did check out the other sizes (I bought a medium), but they too are fairly rigid. The stiffness of the product makes it more difficult for my dog to get the treats out. This does keep him busy longer, but it also causes him to loose interest or his slobber gets all over the ball and the treats making them mush. The mushy treats then get all over the house as does his slobber.
For the most part we avoid treats in the ball now. We have now begun to fill the ball with his dog chow. It’s a small dry food that pretty much falls out as he rolls the ball around. From time to time we fill the ball with chow and then plug the end with part of a treat so he has to get the treat out first.
It should probably be noted that I did use both KONG treats specifically made for this product as well as other treats. The KONG treats got a lime-time-household-ban because they made my dog sick and his vomit stained our new off-white carpet. The other treats don’t make him sick but they still get mushy with all his slobber as he tries to get them out.
Over all, it’ a good buy but probably better for bigger dogs.
Feel guilty about leaving your dog alone for 8 hours a day while you’re at work? Invest in a Kong toy. These flexible, durable toys made out of natural rubber are designed to be chomped, chewed, drooled on, and salivated over. Simply stick a few semi-moist treats, dog biscuits, dog toothpaste, peanut butter, or anything tasty in the middle of the toy, and it gives your dog a few minutes to hours of mental stimulation while you’re gone.
I’ve been lucky – JP, my 11 year old pit bull – has been able to go to work with me for the past 10 years of his life. Unfortunately, he can’t come to work with me anymore, much to the distress of his mother. Since then, I’ve really appreciated Kong (and their other mental stimulation toys and treats) as a veterinarian. Just like how zoo animals need mental stimulation, so does your four-legged friend when he’s home alone. Thankfully, Kong actually make these for large elephants and zoo creatures too! This company and toy definitely gets 2 thumbs up from this pet owner and vet.
