North States Industries Stairway Gate Stairs are very dangerous to a young child. Keep your little explorer out of trouble with the sturdy North States Stairway Gate. This baby gate secures to the doorway with mounting sockets so it provides a safe barrier from the steps. Gate easily swings open with one-hand operation. The gate also works well outside securing porch steps and entrance ways. Preventing accidents in your home is a little easier with this stairway gate.

putting these gates up was not as easy as it should have been. the first one took me almost an hour but the second one took me barely fifteen. the one opens and closes very easy but the second one not so much. we use these in doorways rather than the stairs but for the price they work extrememly well. if we ever need more gates these will be the ones we buy

This gate is a little flimsy, but you can’t beat the price. It keeps my daughter from going down the stairs, but it is a little hard to open and close. I would recommend if you don’t have to use it that much. I wouldn’t trust it to put at the top of the stairs if it swings out going down, since its flimsy your little one could bust through it if it isn’t fastened correctly.

I installed my gate at an awkward angle at the top of my stairs to prevent my strong 10 mth old from going downstairs. Since it’s plastic, the mesh part of the gate does flex some, but the frame is sturdy. It swings easily and quietly, but latching/unlatching requires both hands and some slight force to lift up and pinching the release lever in. Once it locks in place it makes a solid gate.

The gate slides to adjust for length and I couldn’t lock it into a specific position. I’m sure there would be an easy fix with a visit to the hardware store but it doesn’t bother me. However, do be careful that the little one’s fingers aren’t in the gate before sliding or you’ll have pinched fingers. There are no sharp parts to poke or pierce like some other gates.

This would be ideal for keeping pets in check too. Four stars because I don’t know the durability of the locking mechanism. It’s made of the same hard plastic as the frame but from experience this material may wear down over repeated usage.

I bought this for my baby brother, Jay. He is my Mom’s 1 year old foster child who she is in the process of adopting. Here is what my Mom said about the gate:

“The gate seemed OK but was very light weight plastic and we didn’t think it was sturdy enough to keep a strong baby like Jay from breaking it out of the wall and then tumbling with it down the steps. Most importantly, the gate was not very tall, only about 24″ I think, The railing around the top of the steps is more like 32″. We felt that baby would be hanging over the top of the gate and fall down the steps (Jay is already 33 inches tall).”

They ended up buying a different gate, so it was a waste of money for me. If I lived in the same state, I would just bring it home to use in my house for my baby since we don’t have any stairs.
