My dog’s behavior became Very VERY POOR and she would misbehave with this Leader Headcollar. After we did away with it she changed back to her sweet self; and every once in a while wanted to chase after LOUD cars when I was walking her on a leash.
I got a chocolate Lab(think he’s mixed with a little pit, or something) around Christmas time in 09. He’s nine months old. And I tried walking him with just a regular neck collar and leash. And of course that went horribly. He pulled the whole time. Well, I’m a pretty big Dog Whisperer watcher. And he always recommends to use a plain old]slip lead leash. So I got one and took my dog for a walk. And this actually did help a little bit. The slip lead is “supposed” to stay up and that dogs ears, instead of the strong part of his shoulders, like a neck collar does. But this doesn’t always happen with the slip lead. Most of the time it always slips down to his shoulders. Even when it was fastened. So my dog would pull while the leash was slipped down. When it was up by his ears, he followed me. But I always had to stop and rearrange the slip lead back up to his ears, which was annoying. So, I then almost tried Cesar’s Illusion Collar. Which looks like it would work, since it is designed to keep that slip lead up at the ears. But for that price, I didn’t want to get it and it not work.
So a couple days ago I took my dog to my vet. And I was looking at the collars. And the girl at the desk asked me if he pulled, and I said yes. And she said that she’ll get one of the technicians to fit the Gentle Leader on my dog, and show my how to use. That it’s what all the trainers recommend, and that it really works. So the girl came out and fitted the Leader on him, and we went out to the parking lot for a walk. And immediately, my dog walked by mine, and her side. He can’t really pull. And if he does try to then he automatically pulls himself to the side instead of forward. So like I said, immediately he walked calmly right by my side. I could not believe it.
For the past couple days now I’ve been walking him, and each and every walk has been 99% perfect. I say 99% perfect because there was only a couple times when he tried to jump up on me. But I think he was only doing that to get a treat, lol. But when he would try and jump, I would just gently pull up on the leash, and he would sit right down. So every walk has been nice and calm. And this is how walks should be. It looks like my dog is even enjoying the walks more now. He stays right by my side and kind of has that gallop thing going on. So I can tell he’s happy. Before he would be pulling almost the whole time. And I know that was no fun for him, and it definitely wasn’t fun for me.
So for anyone that has a dog that is pulling or jumping on your walks, this Gentle Leader is THE best lead/collar that I have tried yet. And I don’t plan on trying any others. The dog knows that I’m in control. So he has no choice but to give in and just follow me. And because of this he gets to enjoy the walk more.
Definitely get this if you’re having problems. By the way, this is my first review on Amazon. But I am so happy, and feel so strongly about this lead, that I had to get on and let other people know that are currently deciding if they should buy it or not. If you do, make SURE to read the included DVD first before you do anything. The DVD will tell you exactly how to fasten the Leader to your dog, and it will show how to properly use the leash while you’re walking. Plus it gives you a bunch of other tips. But the most important is that it shows you how to properly fasten the Leader to your dog. If you don’t fasten it properly, you can run into problems. And make sure to use treats and praise while you’re fitting the Leader to him, everytime you put it on him, and during your walks.
This thing is under twenty bucks. So you don’t really have much too lose. I’m sure you and your dog will enjoy walks much more after using this.
Had problems with my dog getting away from me and not following direction when using the standard collar. This collar solved both those problems and allows me to lead my dog in a safe and gentle way. Takes a little bit more time to put on but only a minute when you get used to it. After using this, I would never go back to a standard collar.
First of all, this collar comes with the DVD (not all of them do). That’s very helpful!
We got this collar in small for our two doxie-mix pups that were pulling a lot, sniffing a lot, and barking on walks. I found that training them one at a time to get used to this collar was a LOT more effective than training them together. I started with the one that I felt would have the easiest time adjusting to it, and I was able to shower him with praise and encourage him along during our walks, and really focus on him. (It also helped, I think, that the other dog was just acting normal, so it helped ease the tension of a new situation. If it’s new to both of them, they feel each other’s anxiety and kind of team up against the “new situation”.) Then, once I got the first dog really comfortable with it (after about 3 days), I introduced the second collar to our more stubborn dog. She’s still getting used to it (it’s been a few days), but it’s helpful that I can focus my attention on her and praise her during walks. (I also think the fit might not be tight enough–one finger has to “barely be able to fit” behind the neck.) Training them separately also helped ME get used to the collar, too! It definitely takes a little getting used to, and if you’re doing all of those things at once, it can be a disastrous mess and very discouraging.
One thing I noticed is that with small dogs (size SMALL collar), there isn’t much space to adjust the nose strap. The clip on both dogs’ nose straps (they’re about 17lbs each, low-ish to the ground) is basically at the bottom, close to the ring. It’s still effective, though.
Another tip: considering purchasing a Gentle Leader in the color of your dog’s fur. People are generally unfamiliar with the Gentle Leader and assume it’s a muzzle. They’ll either constantly ask you if it’s a muzzle, or they’ll just give you/your dogs weird looks, thinking you’re either torturing them or that your dogs are dangerous. After having bought bright colors the first time around, I then purchased ones that blend in with their fur (black for one, fawn for the other), and they call a lot less attention to themselves.
Overall, with a little patience (esp. with multi-dog households), the Gentle Leader can dramatically change your daily walks! Another tip: treat them every time you put it on and take it off. That also helps build positive associations.
The product does what it claims, gives you more control when walking your dog. The DVD is very helpful and informative. Wasn’t a good product for my dog (Beagle/Endlish Bulldog mix) b/c all over the video it warns that the product could impair your dog’s breathing passageway, which in my mind is quite a risk. My dog also would repeatedly lay down on the ground and stick his nose in the snow, scratch his snout etc–the dvd tells you not to pull with the gentle leader, leaving me powerless with my dog miserable and limp on the ground. I tried with treats and it didn’t work for us. Might work for others but wouldn’t recommend for dog owners who have boxer, bulldogs etc as this may impair their breathing. We had more success with yuppie puppy’s no pull harness.
