This is a must have for anyone who has a dog that loves water! I don’t know how many collars I went though before finding this one… It has been great about staying closed, I wish it was just a little bigger though…
I love this collar. I have a female pitbull and she loves going to the beach and playing in the pool. This collar is great for that. I do not have to worry about it getting wet and it does not irratate her neck. She has sensitive skin and some collars have aggravated her neck very badly this one does not.
My husband and I got the fydo collar for our long-haired chihuahua. The Fydo collar wouldn’t have been our first choice, but our Chihuahua idolizes her big sister, a Terrier Mix who loves to swim. When our Chihuahua took to the water, the collar had to change. I found the Fydo collar by accident looking for the Gummipet collar (which our terrier wears). If it hadn’t been on sale here at Amazon for and outrageously low price ($5 for the small solid pink one) we probably wouldn’t have bought one.
For the most part, we really like it. I’ll break down our likes and dislikes for easy reading.
PROS:
1) Waterproof – gotta love that!
2) Stylish and unusual – Dog collars for my girls are something that I spend far too much money on. I love waterproof collars (since they’re both water dogs) but so many of them are so ugly. The Fydo collars (and the Gummipets collars) are both fairly stylish in terms of waterproof dog collars.
3) “No chew” latch system – this one is also an AWESOME addition. Our chihuahua will chew on a 1cm length of spare collar until there’s nothing left but a ragged edge. We do like that there are no “chewable” ends.
4) Personalization – hubby and I have taken out the metal “Fydo” insert to make our own (more on this below in the CON section).
CONS:
1) The pink color seems to stain or dirty easily. Considering how much time our dogs spend in the water, I would think the collar would look less dirty. But it constantly looks like its got a thin layer of grunge on it, even when I wipe it off with baby wipes.
2) FYDO metal insert – oy, vey, this was a design flaw. It’s a little too heavy and falls out easily, but I do like the design of the collar, so I create my own inserts. For those Fydo owners who are frustrated by the hole left in the collar by the missing insert, I have taken to making my own. I found a background from the internet that matches the collar and seems appropriate (for my pup it was rainbow daisies), pasted that to Powerpoint and customized her name, our phone number, and other information in the space. I cut it out in the oval shape and laminate it (I have a laminator at home) and it looks great, its waterproof, its custom, and it costs me only pennies to make.
3) Latch system – I really do like the collars system of “no chew” ends, but sometimes the latch can be incredibly difficult to undo if you need to remove the collar. I’ve found that if you undo the inside one first, the oustide one will be easier to unlatch.
Overall, my husband and I are quite happy. I would love to buy her the transparent blue, but will wait for it to go on sale again.
For anyone that’s having a problem w/ these collars, like the basic design & security of a regular buckle collar yet waterproof – try out the Ethical PlayStrong Dog Collars.
I actually JUST found them online trying to find a better deal on these. They come in fantastic colors/ designs & have all the great attributes of the rubberized PVC, but have the holes & buckles of traditional PLUS they’re much cheaper! Avg. anywhere between $7-12 from small to larger sizes. They’re really cool too. Sorry Fydo – there’s a better product out there that I don’t have to worry about fitting or falling apart!
NOTE: HALF of the 5* reviews here are EXACT DUPLICATES (10 of 22 at last count) so don’t just buy based on the high rating.
We’ve had this collar for our 70lb, 1.5 yr old, very active doberman mix for a few months now. It seemed like the perfect collar, since we often take him to the beach where he gets soaking wet — we went through 2 other collars that got instantly mildewy, and were tired of having to constantly dry out the others to avoid that.
** PLUSES
- rubber material works as intended — avoids any mildew smells, and dirt washes off pretty easily when the collar is relatively new
- slim & light-weight but beefy design — collar has good thickness for our dog — it feels substantial
** MINUSES
- biggest one — the large, silver metal insert that says “Fydo” on one side and has room for writing dog ID info on the other — it simply does not stay in the collar. DON’T USE THIS AS YOUR DOG’S ONLY ID TAG! There are two rubber tabs that are supposed to retain it in the collar, but they don’t work. Within about 2 weeks of owning the collar, the metal piece just popped out while our dog was vigorously playing at the park. We found it that time and put it back in, but after another 2 weeks or so it was gone for good — lost at the park after popping out again. We emailed Teafco to ask for a replacement, and they very graciously mailed us another insert. This time I literally superglued the insert into our dog’s collar, but within a few weeks, that too popped out of the collar. We were also worried that if the hard metal insert popped out and wedged itself between the collar and our dogs neck, it could cause serious injury to our dog if he rolled on his neck the wrong way or bumped another dog. So we gave up and left it out. Now everyone asks us what’s up with the huge hole in his collar.
- why do I need my dog to advertise the “Fydo” brand with a 1″ diameter silver Fydo logo in his collar anyway?
- this collar uses a rigid metal circle that juts out about 1/2″, and at a rigid 90deg angle, from the collar to hold your own dog tags. Unlike the metal loops on most other collars, this one does NOT pivot at all to lie flat against the collar when you push on it. So if your dog were to roll on a rigid surface or accidentally bump this piece, there’s a 1/2″ piece of metal pushing into your dog’s neck. The possibility of it causing injury might be slight, but I’m mystified why you would chance this and design a dog collar this way.
- the collar size adjustment is clever — there are 2 “nubs” that stick out that you fit into any of the 2 adjustment holes along the collar, but you’re relying entirely on the friction of those nubs staying in the holes to keep your dog’s collar on. Unlike regular collars with the plastic connectors that lock, there is no locking mechanism on this collar. Most of the time it works well, but we’ve had the collar pop off our dog unexpectedly a couple times when the nubs wiggled loose from their holes.
Even though we’re very disappointed in the product, I took the time to write this because this product has so much potential — especially for very active dogs. We’re just hoping Teafco listens to the customer comments here and improves the product design to fix some of these glaring issues. We’d consider buying a version #2, but this version has way too many problems for active dogs.
