If you like purebred dogs, this perennial AKC publication details over the breed standards for over 150 breeds in the seven groups: Hound, Sporting, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding.
Although the descriptions of show standards are complete, the book doesn’t really go into temperament and fit for your family or lifestyle. The book is not really for the novice purebred owner, but rather someone who has an interest in showing as a sport or in breed standards.
For someone new to dogs and dog ownership, this book will help them find the right breed and buy a puppy that appeals to them. Full of informative information for the layman, i recommend this bookAutumn of Blessed Acres service dog
Recently I purchased the 20th edition of the Complete Dog Book for my sister’s birthday and was very disappointed with the black and white photographs. We have an edition in our family similar to this one, but it is dated back when color photos were not used frequently. Why would they choose not to show the beautiful colors of the breeds – not a good decision. I am considering returning this book for the earlier edition even though some of the newer breeds aren’t listed.
This is a wonderful book on the 150 AKC dog breeds. An excellent resource and reference. Only one black and white photo of each breed though, so if you are looking for a picture book this isn’t it. There is a small color photo section, but these are paintings of dogs. In regards to content, I find it more than sufficient in detail for me. I reference it often when I see I new dog at the park or on TV I want to know more about.
Essential book
A must have for every dog owner. Essential to understand dog breeds and breed evolution. I wished there were more and better pictures though.
