The gentle, nonviolent training methods and mysteries of “horse whisperers” have recently enlightened the world’s consciousness of nonviolent training methods.
Now, in The Dog Whisperer, trainer Paul Owens offers a compassionate, nonviolent approach to dog training. His spiritual approach links sound training principles with intuitive and effective insights.
Owens’ compassionate training methods will help you create an emotional bridge to “plug in” and create a deeper bond with your dog than you thought possible. The Dog Whisperer offers a truly humane, revolutionary, and common sense approach to raising and training your dog.
You will learn :
* Learn “dog speak” the body language and vocalizations needed to communicate with your dog.
* How to train your dog without jerking, hitting, kicking, shocking, or shaking
* How to turn affection, play, toys, praise, and social freedom into powerful rewards.
* Learn five ways to establish a leadership role so your dog will happily follow your lead.
* Eliminate behavioral problems such as jumping, barking, and digging.
* How easy and fun training can be when you use The Nine Ingredients of Reward-Based Dog Training and turn affection, play, toys, praise, and social freedom into powerful rewards.

I love my dog.
That being said, it’s obvious that this book is intended for a certain kind of people: hippies and tree-huggers. My dog needs his discipline. He needs to be told what to do in a tone that he understands. Paul Owen’s methods are way too soft… “make your dogs listen to new age music” yeah right… tsk tsk.
The funny thing is that the book’s cover advertises with big fonts “THE COMPASSIONATE NONVIOLENT APPROACH…” What are you implying sir? That the other “dog whisperer” is violent? That he’s not a compassionate guy? Maybe you think you’re “special” or something, or maybe this is just marketing.
The other guy’s book is WAY better anyway.
One of several books that I bought for my daughter who trains dogs as a hobby. Ceasar gets into the pycology of the interaction of the dog and human “pack” in order for the reader to understand why a behavior is happening as well as solutions to the behaviors. my daughter loves the book(s) and I find them interesting
I got the Dog Whisperer from the library and liked it so much I wanted my own copy to keep! It is one of the best dog training books I’ve read (and I read a lot of them.)
The problem with this type of approach is that your companion now becomes your ruler. Dogs don’t have to be mistreated nor do they have to be coddled like royalty with bribes and adoring phrases. Save the treats and praise for tricks, not for establishing boundaries and basic rules of appropriate behavior.
I am sorry to say that this CD is a waste of money. Of the four CD’s that we suffered through (only two worked without skipping or reading an error half the time)we learned more about how to breathe and visualize your dogs good behavior than any solid training information. I also don’t think that any person who picks up a CD on nonviolent dog training needs to be reminded several times in every section not to hit or bite your dog. That was just insulting. Finally, he is clearly pushing a particular brand of supplements which should not be neccessary if you are feeding you dog a high quality dog food.
