I have found this book to be an invaluable tool in understanding my dog and his behavior. Being a psychology major, I appreciate the behavioral approach Dr. Akenhead utilizes along with practicality to make this book a must in every dog owner’s library. It is written in a thorough but informal way that every one can understand. I think of it as my dog owner’s bible. I was looking for some help today for a dog behavior situation my dog presented. I referred to this book and got the answer to my problem. I would recommend this book to anyone, from new puppy owners to seasoned dog owners.
This is a great read as the author Jim Akenhead wrote the book as if he is talking just to the reader. The training steps are easy to follow and do not get so technical that a dog owner will get discouraged from finishing the book. Jim stresses the use of communication and gives the reader a better insight into a dog’s behavior – especially when your precious pup is doing something you do not approve of! My husband and I both have applied Mr. Akenhead’s training steps with great success on both our dogs. A must have book for any one who owns a dog.
A simple read for all dog owners. It gives a streamlined process that is easy to follow. Our dog adapted quickly and is a very happy puppy.
We tried other books like The Art of Raising A Puppy. However those books waste too much time on the process of selecting a puppy and are way too technical. Then we started to train with Jim and fell in love with his no non-sense approach. For those of you not so lucky to live near his training facility do not worry. You can learn his simple process and approach by following his guide in this book. This book is a very easy to read and Jim makes it interesting throughout. Enjoy! You cant go wrong with this book, no matter how old your dog is. Cudos to Jim on a great resource!
I want to recommend the book Thoughtful Owners, Great Dogs for a couple of reasons.
First of all, it is an excellent book. It contains a lot of insightful information
that the average person would never think of. ( My dog is just like people except
for the additional hair.) I have had the companionship of a dog for over 50 years.
There were so many things that I wish I would have realized years ago. The book
gives you a perspective from the other end of a leash. Read it from cover to cover
and both you and your dog will benefit. Second of all, I have a beautiful German
Shepherd dog that was very reactive (aggressive towards people). Jim Akenhead
was recommended to me by a local vet. I have worked with Jim both in individual
and group classes since December of 2008. The results have been remarkable.
